General formula for concentration
c = n or m / v
Concentration changes (dilutions)
c1v1 = c2v2
amount changes (dilutions)
n1/v1 = n2/v2
volume of a sphere
(4πr^3) / 3
Beer-Lambert Law
A = cƐl
where c = conc. (mole/l)
Ɛ = molar extinction coefficient (l/mole/cm)
l = path length (cm)
How find out concentration by absorbance?
- dilution series of known conc.
- run absorbance assays
- draw calibration curve
- record absorbance of unknown solution, use curve.
Formula for moles
moles = mass/mr
Moles molecules
moles = molecules/avogadro’s no.
Formula for catalytic activity
A = amount/time
A = katal (K) or enzyme unit (U)
amount can be moles or mass
Michaelis-Menten equation
Vo = Vmax ([S]/[S]Km)
mV Oxygen conc. (from oxygen electrode)
1000mV = air saturated water = 0.255μmole O2/ml
at 20°C sol. of oxygen in water = 0.255μmole O2/ml
1 litre –> decimetres cubed
1L = 1dm^3
