Cells of the immune system Flashcards
(16 cards)
Eosinophil (defense team)
is a granulated cell which releases its granules (Major Basic Protein) to attack parasites.
Basophil (defense team)
contain cytoplasmic granules which it releases during inflammation and allergy responses
Neutrophil (defense team)
are a phagocyte (cell eater) which circulates in the blood stream. These cells play a key role in innate immunity and inflammation.
Macrophage (captain)
is a “big eater”. There are two main types, those that stay in the tissue to control infection and initiate local tissue repair, and those that are involved in inflammation and the initiation of the immune system.
B cell (offense)
originate and are trained in the bone marrow. They will then move into the blood and secondary lymphoid organs. Once activated, they convert into Plasma cells and secrete antibody.
T cell (offense)
are an important part of the adaptive immune response. They move from the bone marrow to the thymus for “training” and then released into the blood stream.
*80% of the lymphocytes in the blood will be these
What are the 3 main types of T cells?
T helper cells, cytotoxic T cells, and regulatory T cells
NK cells (natural killer) (offense)
are granulated lymphocyctes. They play a key role in the control of cancers and viral infected cells. In particular they respond to cells that are not behaving normally and have withdrawn a specific cell receptor called MHCI (normally present on all cells except RBCs). This causes them to release their granules to kill the cell.
Hematopoietic Stem Cells are self renewing (T/F)?
True
A Macrophage originates from which type of progenitor cell?
Myeloid
Which cell is described here: This granulated cell is involved in inflammation and allergy responses?
Basophil
This phagocytotic cell is a first responder as part of the innate immune system
Neutrophil
Which cell is described here: This phagocytotic cell is able to command the involvement of the adaptive immune response?
Macrophage
Which cell is described here: This granulated lymphocyte looks for cells that have withdrawn the MHCI cell receptor and then kills them?
Natural Killer Cell
The numbers of the cells of the immune system are regulated by a process called “Hematopotetic homostatis”. What is the correct term for the cell death that occurs during this process?
Apoptosis
The myeloid and lymphoid progenitor cells are capable of self renewal? T/F
False
