Cellular respiration Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is cellular respiration
The main process that converts glucose into ATP
Which organisms do cellular respiration
Plants, animals, and all other eukaryotes
What is ATP
Adenosine triphosphate is the energy carrying molecule of cells
What are the parts of a mitochondrion
Matrix, inner membrane
What are reactants of cellular respiration
Glucose and oxygen
What are products of cellular respiration
Carbon dioxide and water and ATP
What are the 3 main stages of cellular respiration and where do they take place
Glycolysis (cytoplasm), Krebs cycle (matrix), electron transport chain (inner membrane)
What happens during glycolysis
Glucose is broken down into 2 pieces (pyruvaste) that enter Krebs cycle and a little ATP is made. Electrons go to ETC. Glycolysis is anaerobic
What happens during krebs cycle
The rest of glucose is broken down and electrons are extracted got to the ETC. a little ATP is made. It makes electron carriers that move to ETC. Krebs cycle is aerobic
What happens during ETC
Energy is transferred to a chain or proteins in the inner membrane of the mitochondrion. The proteins use the energy to pump hydrogen ions against the membrane. ATP is created and water is formed. This process is aerobic and is where we get most of our ATP
What are the molecules that carry electrons to the ETC
NADH and FADH2
