Cellular Respiration Flashcards
(10 cards)
Cellular Respiration
the process by which cells break down glucose in the presence of oxygen to produce ATP, carbon dioxide, and water
ATP
Adenosine Triphosphate; main carrying molecule of energy that is produced during cellular respiration
Glucose
sugar molecule broken down during cellular respiration to release energy
Carbon Dioxide
A waste product of cellular respiration released during the Krebs Cycle
Oxygen
a gas required for aerobic respiration
Water
A byproduct of the ETC in aerobic respiration
Mitochondria
The organelle in which most of cellular respiration occurs; aka the ‘powerhouse’ of the cell; only found in prokaryotes
Pyruvate
the end product of glycolysis; enters the mitochondria for the Krebs cycle to occur
Glycolysis
the first step of cellular respiration; breaks down glucose into pyruvate in the cytoplasm and produced a small quantity of ATP
Krebs Cycle/Citric Acid Cycle
the second stage of cellular respiration; occurs in the mitochondrial matrix; produced carbon dioxide, ATP, NADH, and FADH₂
