Photosynthesis Flashcards
(14 cards)
Photosynthesis
the process by which green plants use sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water to create glucose and release oxygen
Chloroplast
organelle in plant cells where photosynthesis occurs
Chlorophyll
Green pigment in chloroplasts that absorbs light energy for photosynthesis
Carbon Dioxide
A gas taken in by leaves through stomata; used in photosynthesis
Water
Taken in by plant roots and used in photosynthesis to produce glucose and oxygen
Glucose
Sugar produced during photosynthesis; stored for plant energy
Oxygen
A waste product of photosynthesis released into the air through stomata
Light Energy
Energy from the sun that is used to power photosynthesis
Stomata
Small openings on leaves that allow for oxygen and carbon dioxide to move in and out
Xylem
Plant tissue that transports water from the roots to the leaves of a plant
Phloem
Plant tissue that carries glucose from the leaves to the rest of the plant
Light Dependent Reactions
First stage of photosynthesis; required light to produce ATP and NADPH in the thylakoids
Light Independent Reactions
Second stage of photosynthesis; uses ATP and NADPH to create glucose from carbon dioxide in the stroma
Stroma
Fluid filled space inside of the chloroplast that surrounds the thylakoids; is where the light independent reactions of photosynthesis take place
