What is the difference between national population register and national register of citizen?
The National Population Register (NPR) is a register of all “usual residents” in India, including both citizens and foreigners. It’s used for government planning and scheme implementation. To be included, you just need to have lived in an area for six months or more, or intend to. No documents are generally required; it’s based on self-declaration.
The National Register of Citizens (NRC), on the other hand, is a register of only Indian citizens. Its main goal is to identify legal citizens and, by extension, illegal immigrants. Unlike the NPR, the NRC requires individuals to provide documentary proof to establish their citizenship. So far, a full NRC has only been implemented in Assam.
