Central And Peripheral Systems Flashcards
(16 cards)
What are the two divisions of the peripheral nervous system?
The sensory division and the motor division.
What is the function of the sympathetic nervous system?
The sympathetic nervous system prepares the body for stress, by increasing heart rate and breathing and slowing down digestion.
What are the two divisions of the autonomic nervous system?
Sympathetic and parasympathetic
What is the function of the sensory division of the peripheral nervous system?
The sensory division transmits information from the sense organs to the central nervous system.
What is the function of the motor division of the peripheral nervous system?
The motor division transmits impulse from the central nervous system to muscles and glands.
What are the two parts of the motor division of the peripheral nervous system?
The somatic (voluntary) and the autonomic (involuntary)
What are the components of a reflex arc?
Sensory receptor, sensory neuron, interneuron, motor neuron, muscle.
What type of sensory receptor is sensitive to light?
Photoreceptors
What type of sensory receptors are found in the nose?
Chemoreceptors
What are mechs receptors sensitive to?
Movement, pressure
What is the function of the semi-circular canals of the inner ear?
They monitor the position of the body.
How are the waves of sound passed on the the ear?
Collect in the auditory canal, tympanum vibrates, hammer, anvil and stirrup vibrate, oval window of the cochlea and then the fluid of the cochlea stimulates mechanoreceptors.
Where are the sensory receptors of the eye located?
The receptors and on the retina.
Differentiate between rods and cones.
Both are photoreceptors. Rods are very sensitive to light and are used for night vision, which is black and white. Comes are sensitive to colour.
How are the iris and pupil related?
The pupil is the opening in the iris. The size of the pupil can be changed to regulate the amount of light entering the eye.
What structures make up the central nervous system?
The brain and spinal cord.
