Central Nervous System Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is the nervous system
It’s a system that receives signals from internal and external part of the body and reacts by responding to these changes
What I the nervous system made up of
CNS= BRAIN AND SPINAL CORD PNS= 12 CANIAL NERVES AND 36 SPINAL NERVES
Central nervous system
The brain is protected by the meninges and cranium and the spinal cord by the vertebrae
Meninges divided into
Dura mater
Arachnoid membrane
Pia mater
Cerebrum
Position
Function
Position
- the largest part of the brain located in the cranium
Function
-centre of all menta functioning
-responsible for voluntarily action
-recieved nerve impulse from the sensory organ
Cerebellum
Position
Function
Position
- located behind and below the cerebrum
Function
- controls muscle toning
- centre of balance and equilibrium
Corpus callosum
Position
Function
Position
-C shaped structure between the 2 halves of the cerebellum
Function
-conducts impulse from left and right hemisphere of cerebrum
-co ordination communication processes between the 2 hemispheres
Medulla oblongata
Position
Function
Position
-forms bottom part of brain sterm and extention of the spinal chord
Function
-controls automatic functions eg breathing, heart rate and widening and narrowing of blood vessels
-transmits impulse from brain to spinal cord and spinal cord to brain
Spinal cord
Position
Function
Position
-extention from medulla oblongata to the vertebral canal lumber region
Function
-provides parthway for nerve impulses to and from brain
-contains relax action that initiates relax action
