Central Nervous System Flashcards

1
Q

divisions of the CNS and PNS

A

Central Nervous System (CNS)

  1. Brain
  2. Spinal Cord

Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)

  1. Autonomic division
    - Regulates internal environment
    - Carries info from the CNS to organs, blood vessels and gland
    - Sympathetic (fight or flight)
    - Parasympathetic (rest and digest)
  2. Somatic division
    - Carries info to the CNS from proprioceptive structures and from the CNS to muscles

Q

what do glial cells do

A
  1. Surround and secure neurons in place
  2. Supply nutrients and oxygen to neurons
  3. Insulate neurons from one another
  4. Destroy pathogens

Q

components of a motor unit

A
  1. Extrafusal muscle fiber (contract and make movement)
  2. Intrafusal muscle fiber (sense change in stretch/position of muscle)
  3. Alpha (a) motor neuron (innervate extrafusal muscle fibers)
  4. Gamma (y) motor neuron (innervate intrafusal muscle fibers)
