Central Nervous System Flashcards
(16 cards)
What does CNS stand for?
Central Nervous System
What is the primary function of the CNS?
Receive information from all over your body, process that information and then send a response.
What does the brain control?
How we think, learn, move and feel.
What is the role of the cerebellum?
Responsible for balance and coordination.
What do the brain stem and spinal cord control?
The body’s vital functions, such as breathing, blood pressure and heart rate.
What is the function of the hypothalamus?
To maintain homeostasis.
What is the role of the spinal cord?
Sends messages back and forth between the brain and nerves running through the body.
How does the CNS process and respond to stimuli?
Sensory receptors detect change in body or environment, send electric signals to the CNS, which receives information, makes a decision, and sends a message via motor neurons to effectors.
What is the role of neurons in the CNS?
Neurons use electrical and chemical signals to send information between areas of the brain, spinal cord and body.
What are nerve cells called?
Neurons.
What do neurons do?
Transmit electrical messages all around your body.
What are the three types of neurons?
Motor neurons, connector neurons, and sensory neurons.
What do motor neurons do?
Carry messages from the CNS to the effectors (muscles).
What is the function of connector neurons?
Transmits messages between neurons and the CNS.
What are sensory neurons sensitive to?
Stimuli such as heat or light.
What do sensory neurons carry messages to?
Cells in sense organs (e.g., eyes, ears, tongue, and skin).
