What is a reflex arc?
The pathway that a reflex takes in the body, to make a quick movement without going to the brain.
What are the components of a reflex arc?
The components are sensory receptors, sensory neurons, interneurons, motor neurons, and effectors.
What is the role of sensory receptors in a reflex arc?
They sense change in the body or environment.
What is the role of sensory neurons in a reflex arc?
They carry the electrical signal to the interneurons.
What is the role of interneurons in a reflex arc?
They make a decision on what to do.
What is the role of motor neurons in a reflex arc?
They carry the interneurons’ response to the effectors.
What are effectors in a reflex arc?
They carry out the response.
How does a reflex action occur?
When our hand touches something hot, our sensory receptors receive it, sending an electrical message down the sensory neurons to the interneurons, which then sends a response down the motor neurons to the effectors, creating a response, like pulling your hand away.
Why are reflexes important?
Reflexes are important in self-preservation because they help protect us from harm, such as pulling away from a hot stove or avoiding injury from a moving vehicle.
What is the pathway of a reflex arc?
Receptor - sensory neuron - spinal cord - motor neuron - effector (muscle).
