Cerebral Ventricles Flashcards
(43 cards)
What is the nervous system developed from?
Embryonic neural tube
What are the 2 parts of the embryonic neural tube?
Caudal and cephalic
Which part of the embryonic neural tube forms the spinal cord?
Caudal part
Which part of the embryonic neural tube forms the cerebral vesicles?
Cephalic part
What does the lumen of the neural tube in the brain develop into?
cerebral vesicles
What does the lumen of the neural tube in the SC develop into?
Central canal
What are the specialized vascular plexus that the cerebral ventricles house?
Choroid plexus
What is responsible for the secretion of the CSF?
Choroid plexus
What are the 3 locations that CSF circulates?
1.) subarachnoid space
2.) central canal of spinal cord
3.) all cerebral ventricles
What are the 4 ventricles of the brain?
1.) Lateral (2)
2.) Third
3.) Fourth
Where are the lateral ventricles located?
They are amorphous spaces in each cerebral hemisphere (all 4 lobes)
Where is the third ventricle?
Irregular and narrow space within the diencephalon between right and left thalami (between thalamic nuclei)
Where is the fourth ventricle?
Diamond-shaped space bounded by the pons and upper part of the medulla (anteriorly) and the cerebellum (posteriorly) (between pons and the cerebellum)
What is each lateral ventricle connected to the third ventricle through?
Interventricular foramen (of Monro)
What is the 3rd vent. connected to the 4th vent. through?
Cerebral aqueduct that passes through midbrain
What are the 3 areas that the 4th vent. is connected?
1.) central canal of the spinal cord (inf.)
2.) 3rd vent (sup.)
3.) 2 lateral apertures (foramina of Luschka)
Flow of CSF Circulation
Heart–> Choroid plex. of lat. vent–> CP of 3rd vent. –> CP of 4th vent. (From each CP, CSF goes to the corresponding ventricle) Lat–>3rd–>4th –> subarachnoid space –> arachnoid villi –> dural venous sinuses –>internal jug. vein –> heart
Which ventricular spaces can CSF be produced?
ALL 4 ! Both Lat, 3rd, and 4th
What are the branches of the vertebro-basilar system? (x6)
1.) Vertebral arteries
2.) Basilar arteries
3.) Posterior Cerebral Artery (PCA)
4.) Posterior communicating arteries
5.) Posterior anterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) (covers brain stem as well)
6.) Superior cerebellar (covers brain stem as well)
What are the branches of the carotid system?
1.) Middle Cerebral A. (MCA)
2.) Anterior Cerebral A. (ACA)
3.) Anterior Communicating A.
A clog in which artery is the most likely cause of stroke?
PICA (post. ant. inf. cerebellar A.)
What is the cerebral aqueduct?
Part of the ventricular system and runs through the mid brain
What are the functions of the CSF?
1.) Nutrient delivery (brain tissue)
2.) Waste removal (brain tissue)
3.) Fluid cushion around brain and spinal cord in subarachnoid space
What type of flow in the CSF in the ventricular system?
unilateral
