Define Science
The study of the physical and living world through observation and experimentation.
Define Biology
The study of living organisms and how they interact with each other and their environment.
What is the purpose of the scientific method?
Scientists are able to run the same experiment in the same format.
What is a scientific theory?
A theory that is supported by evidence and scientific reasoning.
What is a theory?
A guess which is not supported by data.
What is the 1st step of the scientific method?
Observation
What is the second step of the scientific method?
Create a question. (wonder how something works)
What is step 3 of the scientific method?
Create a Hypothesis
What is a hypothesis?
An educated guess about how something works
What is the 4th step of the scientific method?
Prediction
What does prediction mean?
If blank then blank will happen based on the hypothesis
What is the 5th step of the scientific method
Experiment
What is an experiment?
A way to test if your hypothesis is true or false.
What is the 6th step of the scientific method?
Analysis
What happens during analysis?
Looking at the results to see if it proved the hypothesis or not.
What is the 7th step of the scientific method?
Reassess Hypothesis and make changes as needed.
What is an independent variable?
The one thing that changes in an experiment.
What is the dependent variable?
Whatever is being affected by changes in the independent variable.
What is a control variable?
Something that doesn’t change between all experiments.
What is an experimental variable?
The variable that is changed in the experiment. (same as independent variable)
What is the 1st characteristic of all living organisms?
Levels of organization
What is the 2nd characteristic of all living organisms?
Response to stimulation from environment
What is the 3rd characteristic of all living organisms?
Reproduction
What is the 4th characteristic of all living organisms?
Growth and Development
