Personal trouble
A problem where only the values and goals of one family or individual are threatened
Sociology
The scientific study of societies and human social behavior
Public issue
Social problems that impact a large number of people. Are matters of debate. Collective and structural solutions are needed
Social problem
An influential group defines a social condition as threatening its values when the condition affects a large number of people and when the condition can be remedied by collective action
Values
Peoples ideas about what is good or bad and right or wrong
Norms
More concrete than values. Rules of conduct that guide people’s behavior
Deviance
Behaviors or characteristics that violate important group norms and as a consequence they are reacted to with social disapproval
Social institutions
Relatively stable clusters of social relationships that involve people working together to meet some basic needs of society
Subculture
A group within a culture that shares some of the beliefs, values, and Norma of the larger culture but also has some that are distinctly its own
Ethnocentrism
The tendency to view ones own culture or subculture as the best and to judge other cultures or subcultures in comparison to it
Power
The ability of one group to realize it’s will even in the face of resistance from other groups
Authority
Legitimate power that is obeyed because people believe it is right and proper that they obey
Sociological imagination
He ability to understand the relationship between what is happening in people’s in people’s personal lives and social forces that surround them
Theory
A set of statements that explains the relationships between phenomenon
Functionalist
Society is a system made up of a number of interrelated parts each performing a function that continues into the operation of the whole
Conflict perspective
The idea that society consists of different groups who struggle with one another to attain the scarce societal resources that are considered to be valuable
Interest group
Is a group whose members share distinct and common concerns and who benefit from similar social policies and practices
Interactionist perspective
Focuses everyday social interaction among individuals rather than on large societal structures such as politics and education
Definition of the situation
People’s perceptions and interpretations of what is important in a situation and what actions are appropriate
Research
The systematic examination of empirical data
Hypothesis
Tentative statements that can be tested regarding relationships between two or more factors
Science
Is a method of obtaining objective and systemic knowledge through observation
Sample
Elements that are taken from a group or populations and that serves as a source of data. Should be representative
