what is media
is any vehicle that delivers a message
- it can be a teacher, tv, movie, book, or radio
mass media
electronic or mechanical channels of delivering one to many communication
it broadcasts messages to large groups of people who generally are not in direct contact with the sources of the messages
like radio, tv/movie, internet and influencers
social media
means of connecting and interacting actively
- networking platforms (insta, fb, twitter)
what are the key differences between media and social media
distribution: mass media are distributed at a large scale, social media is shared with a smaller audience
production: mass media have complex divisions of labor, social media can be created by one person fast
power: mass media has a one way flow of information, social media has 2-way flow (can view and create)
content: mass media strive to a broad audience as possible to get revenue, social media users make content with broad appeal to build a following
producer/consumer relationship: mass media have a impersonal and anonymous relationships with viewers, social media content is made by individual users who know their audiences
