ch 14) electrochem Flashcards
(14 cards)
what do all cells have
they have 2 electrodes ( anode/cathode) which are seperated
what way do electrons flow
anode to cathode
what is the purpose of a salt bridge
it helps the movment of ions while the reaction is occuring
what does a voltemeter measure
measures an energy diffrence in volts and measures how much the lose of e- is compared to the gain e-
where does the SOA and SRA occur at anode or cathode
SOAC A GERC
strongest oa is at the cathode
strongest ra is at the anode
is the anode + or -
it is negative can think of anode is like anion which anions ar negative
is the cathode + or -
it is possitive can think of cathode = pawsitive so cathode positive
what can secondary cells do that primary cells cant
primary cells - cannot be recharged (one use)
secondary charge- can be recharged over and over ex phones
where does oxidation and reduction occur in a voltaic cell
oxidation - anode (release electrons)
reduction - cathode (gain electrons from anode)
what side in a votaic cell will experience weathering and lose of mass of the metal overtime
the anode side since it is loosing electrons overtime it will lose mass and at the same time the cathode side will gain mass overtime because it is gaining electrons
what does a salt bridge have in it
its an electrolyte solution with +’s and -‘s
- allows for anode and cathode to both stay neutral
ex) anode losses electrons so ions from salt bridge come to make it neutral vise versa for cathode
- and allows better flow of electrons
what does a single line stand for in cell notation
a phase boundry ex between metal and the (aq) electrlyte in the middle between both solid metals
what does a double line stand for in cell notation
a physical boundry that seperates 2 solutions
