thermal energy ch 11 Flashcards
(7 cards)
what is the least energy change type to the highest
physical, chemical, nuclear
what is enthlapy
the total potential and kinetic energy
potential energy is where energy is found in between molecules or within atoms
kinetic energy is the movment of atoms and the higher temp means the more kinetic energy
endothermic traits / ways of representing
- possitive enthlapy
- on the reactants side
- tempature of water goes down
- on graph the step moves up to show positive
exothermic traits / ways of representing
- negative enthlapy
- on products side
- temp of water moves up
- on graph step moves down to show negative
3 things needed for a calorimiter to be sucessful
1- isolated system !!! matter cannot move in or our
2- carefully designed experiments
3- precise measurements
when using the Q=mct formula how do you know what units Q will be
the units of Q are relient of how the mass matches the specific heat capacity
if the mass is kg then the Q will be kJ if the mass is in g then Q will be J and need / 1000 to get KJ
mass must match specific heat capacity !
