What does the external organizational environment include?
All elements existing outside the boundary of the organization that have the potential to affect it
Includes competitors, resources, technology, and economic condition.
What are the two components of the organization’s external environment?
- Task environment
- General environment
What is the task environment?
Closer to the organization and directly influences its basic operations and performance
What is included in the internal environment of an organization?
Elements within the organization’s boundaries, including current employees, management, and corporate culture
Who are considered customers in the task environment?
Individuals who acquire goods or services from the organization
What defines competitors in the task environment?
Organizations in the same industry that provide goods or services to the same set of customers

Provide the raw materials that the organization uses to produce its output

People in the environment who can be hired to work for the organization

Events originating in foreign countries and new opportunities for U.S. companies in other countries

Scientific and technological advancements in a specific industry and society at large

Demographic characteristics, norms, customs, and values of the general population
What is the economic dimension in the general environment?
The general economic health of the country or region in which the organization operates

Legal–political dimension
What does the natural dimension encompass?
All elements that occur naturally on Earth, including plants, animals, rocks, and resources such as air, water, and climate
What does uncertainty mean in the context of environmental factors?
Managers do not have sufficient information about environmental factors to understand and predict environmental needs and changes

Links to and coordinates the organization with key elements in the external environment
