What are infectious pathogens?
microorganisms that can cause disease in a host
What are some common pathogens?
common cold, flu, covid 19, e-coli, salmonella, streptococcus pyogenes, streptococcus aureus, ringworm, athlete’s foot, and malaria
How can you contract infectious pathogens?
through either direct contact with another person or animal carrying the disease, or indirect contact like touching a surface after an infectious person has touched it
What are bloodborne pathogens?
microorganisms that cause disease and are present in human blood
What are some common examples of bloodborne pathogens?
HIV, HBV, HCV
What are standard precautions?
a minimum set of safety guidelines published by the CDC to protect healthcare workers and other patients from contagious illnesses
What is PPE?
personal protective equipment
What items are included in PPE?
gowns or labcoats, face shields, goggles, masks, and gloves
What are sharps?
items that can penetrate the skin
