What is USP 800?
it provides standards for safe handling of hazardous drugs
What are the recommendations included in the USP 800?
use and maintenance of proper engineering controls, ensuring proper storage of hazardous drugs, use of appropriate hand hygiene and use of PPE, and ensuring proper disposal of used hazardous drugs
What is the NIOSH?
the national institute for occupational safety and health
What is a hazardous drug defined as by the NIOSH?
any drug that exhibits one or more of the following characteristics in humans or animals:
* carcinogenicity
* teratogenicity
* organ toxicity at low doses
* reproductive toxicity
* genotoxicity
What is carcinogenicity?
ability to cause cancer
What is teratogenicity?
ability to cause abnormalities or deformities to fetus or unborn child
What is reproductive toxicity?
ability to cause harm to sexual function and potential infertility
What is genotoxicity?
ability to cause harm or cell mutation at a genetic level in the DNA
What is Azathioprine?
used to prevent rejection of a transplanted kidney
What is Carbamazepine?
used to treat epilepsy and nerve pain
What is Cisplatin?
a chemotherapy drug used to treat cancers
What is Cyclosporine?
used together with other medicines to prevent the body from rejecting a ttransplanted organ
