CH 2: 1D Kinematics Flashcards
displacement vs distance
displacement: magnitude and direction, a vector (final position minus the initial position)
distance: sum of absolute value of all the magnitudes of displacement (scalar)
what is velocity
velocity is displacement/time in that interval. its a vector so it has both a magnitude and direction. using m/s
what is speed
speed is distance travelled/time it takes. has no direction so its a scalar.
what is acceleration
acceleration is velocity/time and has m/s^2 for units. its also a vector. if there is constant velocity, then acceleration is 0
what to look out for when doing graphs
when there’s a straight slope- constant
slope of position vs time graph- velocity. the instant velocity is the tangent
slope of velocity vs time graph- acceleration while the area is displacement
area of acceleration vs time graph- velocity
