CH 3: 2D Kinematics, Vectors Flashcards
(8 cards)
how to add vectors
by doing the “tip to tail” method
the “tip to tail” method is where a vector is drawn in whatever direction, and the next vector would be drawn at the “tip” of the first vector. doesn’t matter what order the vectors are drawn, as long as the last arrow is drawn from the “tail” of the first vector and points to the “tip” of the last. then do trig
how to subtract vectors
same as addition of vectors except one vector is now pointing in the other direction. think of the arrow part just moved to the opposite side
analytical method for vectors
using trig to find out direction and magnitude if given a graph with vectors, then just use the coords of the graph.
A = (Ax. Ay)
A = Ax + Ay
vectors by components
by splitting C = A + B into x and y components and then adding/subtracting
Cx = Ax + Bx
Cy = Ay + By
What is projectile motion
an obj is given initial velocity in both x and y directions and is independent of each other. x velocity stays constant while y velocity moves according to free fall (accel. due to gravity)
what is the velocity at the highest point of the motion
0 m/s because it’s about to fall downwards
what is relative velocity
velocity of a certain obj in a certain frame, velocity observed with respect to another observer (rest, OF moving frame and IN moving frame
v = V + v’
v - in rest frame
V - of moving frame
v’ - in moving frame
what is meant by “reference to” or “relative to”
means that whatever its referring to (usually something stationary like land), the velocity is in the perspective of that referred subject (ie. relative to me is velocity measured in my perspective)
