Definitions of and differences between formal and informal assessments

  • Formal assessments have a single set of expectations for all students. They include exams, diagnostic tests, achievement tests, screening/intelligence tests, etc.
  • Informal assessments evaluate student’s performance without using standardized tests. Examples are classroom projects, experiments, and presentations.
