Root Word

A

The base of the word. Can stand alone, and holds the fundamental meaning. A word can have more than 1 root. Combining vowels are attached to link it to the suffix or another root word using /o or /i. Ex:
Blephar/o = eyelid
Derm/o = skin
Hem/o, Hemat/o = blood

Prefix

A

The beginning of a word, provides its meaning, location, time, or number. Ex:
Ab- = away from
Ad- = toward, near
Ante- = before
Poly- = many, much

Suffix

A

The end of a word indicating procedure, condition, disorder, or disease. Ex:
-centesis = puncture, tap
-desis = binding, fusion
-ectomy = excision, surgical removal
-tripsy = crushing
