Root Word
The base of the word. Can stand alone, and holds the fundamental meaning. A word can have more than 1 root. Combining vowels are attached to link it to the suffix or another root word using /o or /i. Ex:
Blephar/o = eyelid
Derm/o = skin
Hem/o, Hemat/o = blood
Prefix
The beginning of a word, provides its meaning, location, time, or number. Ex:
Ab- = away from
Ad- = toward, near
Ante- = before
Poly- = many, much
Suffix
The end of a word indicating procedure, condition, disorder, or disease. Ex:
-centesis = puncture, tap
-desis = binding, fusion
-ectomy = excision, surgical removal
-tripsy = crushing
Cranial cavity
Space inside the skull that holds the brain
Spinal cavity
Space in the spinal column containing the spinal cord
Thoracic cavity
Space in the chest containing the heart, lungs, esophagus, trachea, bronchi, and thymus
Abdominal cavity
Space containing the lowest part of the esophagus, stomach, intestines, kidneys, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, and ureters.
Pelvic cavity
Space containing urinary bladder, certain reproductive organs, parts of the large intestine, and rectum.
