Ch. 3 Slides 1-31 Flashcards
Stoichiometry
Area of study that examines the quantities of substances consumed and produced in chemical reactions.
What is the study of Stoichiometry based on?
The Law of Conservation of Mass (Antoine Lavoisier, 1789)
Chemical Equations
What chemists use to represent chemical reactions on paper.
Reactants
The starting materials in Chemical equations.
H + HO -> H2 +HO
What is often written in parentheses to the right of each formula or symbol?
States of Matter
(g) Gas : (l) Liquid : (s) Solid
(aq) dissolve in aqueous (water) solution
Δ
Symbol sometimes used instead of an arrow in a balancing equation.
- Combination
- Decomposition
- Combustion
Types of Reactions
Combination Reaction
What reaction has two or more substances react to form one product?
Decomposition Reaction
The reaction in which one substance breaks down into two or more substances.
Combustion Reaction
This reaction is rapid, often involves oxygen, and produces a flame.
Formula Weight
The sum of the atomic weights for the atoms in a chemical formula.
Molecular Mass
The sum of the atomic weights of the atoms in a molecule
Mole (Mol)
The amount of a substance that contains as many elementary entities as there are atoms in exactly 12.00g of 12C
Avogadro’s number
The number of atoms/particles equal to 1 mole of an element
1 mol/ Avogadro’s number Number
(6.022 x 10^23)
Molar Mass
The mass of 1 mole of a substance (in grams)
Molar Mass of an Element
The Atomic Weight for the element from the periodic table.
