therapeutic use
treatment of a disease or condition to relieve symptoms (i.e., medications for allergies)
diagnostic use
used in conjunction with radiology to allow the physician to pin-point the location of a disease process
i.e., dye that is injected into a vein so that it enhances the x-rays to specific body parts such as kidney or lung
curative use
removes/eliminates the causative agent
i.e., antibiotics to treat a throat infection caused by Streptococcus (Strep Throat)
replacement use
used to replace or supplement substances normally found in the body
i.e., hormones such as insulin and estrogen
preventative or prophylactic use
wards off or lessens the severity of a disease
i.e., vaccinations
