Ch. 4 - Forgetting definitions Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is retrieval failure theory?
A theory of forgetting that states that memories are inaccessible because retrieval cues that were present when the memory was formed are missing at the time of retrieval
What is the ‘tip of the tongue’ phenomenon?
When we remember some info about the word/info we are trying to recall but cannot remember the actual word/info
What is the inference theory?
Theory of forgetting that refers to the tendency for other memories, either new or old to impair the retrieval of a required memory
What is retroactive interference?
The tendency for new information to obstruct the retrieval of previously learnt information
What is proactive interference? (PON)
The tendency for previously learnt information to obstruct the retrieval of newly learnt information
What is motivated forgetting as informed by the work of sigmund freud?
Motivated forgetting refers to the forgetting of LTMS that occurs because of a conscious or unconscious desire to block painful or traumatic memories from entering our conscious awareness
What is repression?
A form of motivated forgetting, where an individual unconsciously blocks painful or traumatic memories from entering conscious awareness
What is suppression?
An active, conscious attempt to put something out of awareness
What is decay theory?
A theory of forgetting that states that forgetting occurs due to the gradual fading of memory traces over time due to disuse
What is sensitivity?
Sensitivity refers to the amount of info it detects in memory
What is mnemonic device?
any system or technique that improves your memory
What is memory reconstruction? (rebuilding a memory)
remember a past event and the features of that event, and putting them together when recalled
What is schema?
your bias or preconceived ideas (your influences affecting how you see something) e.g. country person may describe pig as “useful for pork”, city may describe them as “messy”
What is a leading question?
a question that features incorrect info as a means of implanting false memories
