Flashcards in Ch 42 Peds Renal / Urinary Deck (14):
1

Glomerulonephritis

group of kidney disorders characerized by inflammatory injury in the glomerulus, most caused by immunological rxn
results in proliferative and inflammatory changes w/in the glomerular structure
destruction, inflam, sclerosis of glomeruli of kidneys

2

glomerulonephritis s/sx

facial edema (more prominent in morning)
decreased urine
cloudy, smoky, brown urine w exc foam
HA, abdominal pain
incr BUN and crea
inc antistreptolysin O titer (dx disorders caused by strep infections)

3

nephrotic syndrome

kidney disorder w massive proteinuria, hypoalbuminemia (hypoproteinemia), and edema

4

nephrotic syndrome management

reduce excretion of urinary protein
maintain protein free urine
redue edema
prevent infection
minimize omplications

5

hemolytic uremic syndrome

asso. w bacterial toxins, chemicals, and viruses
occurs mostly in 6mo - 5 yr

6

hemolytic uremic syndrome s/sx

acquired hemolytic anemia
thrombocytopenia
renal injury
CNS symptoms
hemorrhagic manifestations

7

adverse ex of corticosteroid therapy

impaired wound healing
hyperglycemia
skin fragility
abnormal fat deposition
emotional lability
hirsutism
moon facies
osteoporosis

8

enuresis

child is unable to control bladder fxn

9

cryptorchidism

one or both testes fail to descend through the inguinal canal into the scrotal sac

10

epispadias and hypospadias

congenital defects involving abnormal placement f the urethral orifice of the penis
surgery done before age of toilet training (usually bet. 16-18mo age)

11

epispadias

urethral orifice is located on the dorsal surface of the penis
often occurs with exstrophy of the bladder

12

hypospadias

urethral orifice is located below the glans penis along the ventral surface

13

bladder exstrophy

congenital anomaly w extrusion of hte urinary bladder to the outside of the body through a defect int he lower abdominal wall

14

bladder exstrophy tx

surgery in first few dys of life
subsequent surgeries = reconstructive
