Ch. 5 Tissues Flashcards
(28 cards)
similar cells with a common function
tissue
study of tissues
histology
close space between cells, located among cells that form linings
tight junctions
form “spot welds” between cells, located among outer skin cells
desmosomes
tubular channels between cells, located in cardiac muscle cells
gap junctions
General characteristics of Epithelial Tissue
- covers organs and the body
- line body cavities
- line hollow organs
- have a free surface
- have a basement membrane
- avascular
- cells readily divide
- cells tightly packed
- often have desmosomes
- function in protection, secretion, absorption and excretion
- classified according to cell shape and number of cell layers
Simple
1 layer
stratified
many layers
squamous
flat (tile shaped)
cuboidal
cube shaped
columnar
column shape
pseudo
false
Simple Squamous characteristics
- single layer of flat cells
- substances pass easily through
- line air sacs
- line blood vessels
- line lymphatic blood vessels
Simple cuboidal characteristics
- single layer of cube shaped cells
- line kidney tubules
- cover ovaries
- line ducts of some glands
Simple Columnar characteristics
- single layer of elongated cells
- nuclei usually near basement
- membrane at same level
- sometimes posses cilia sometimes microvilli
- often have goblet cells
- line uterus, stomach, intestines
secretor of mucus
goblet cell
Pseudostratified columnar characteristics
- single layer of elongated cells
- nuclei at two or more levels
Stratified squamous characteristics
- many cell layers
- top cells are flat
- can accumulate keratin
- outer layer of skin
- line oral cavity, vagina, and anal canal
protein that kills old skin cells
keratin
Stratified cuboidal characteristics
-2 to 3 layers
- cube shaped cells
- line ducts of mammary glands, sweat glands, salivary glands, and pancreas
Stratified columnar characteristics
- top layer of elongated cells
- cube shaped cells in deeper layers
- line part of male urethra and part of pharynx (throat)
Transitional characteristics
- many cell layers
- cube shaped and elongated cells
- line urinary bladder, uterus, and part of urethra
composed of cells that are specialized to produce and secrete substances
Glandular Epithelium
2 types of Glandular Epithelium
endocrine glands and exocrine glands
