How does the election of 1860 lead to war? Why does the fall of fort sumter start the Civil war?
The election results in Lincoln becoming president which the southerners see as an abolitionist victory. States secede and arguing happens over who owns Fort sumter. Fort sumter falls after being shelled for 33 hours leading to more secession then resulting in more fighting
What does John brown do abt slavery? How does this affect him?
John Brown siezed a federal arsenal and started a rebellion against slaveowners. This affected him bc it led to his execution.
Who was dred Scott? Why did his case go to the Supreme Court? What does the Supreme Court decide?
Dred Scott was an enslaved man taken to a free state where he sued for his freedom at a supreme court level. Scott loses and the Court also decides the Missouri compromise was unconstitutional
What does the fugitive slave act do? What effect did it have on the north?
Fugitive slave act required slaves to be returned to their owner even in a free state. This upset northerners and they didn’t listen a lot of the time (?).
What was the underground railroad?
A series of trails used to help enslaved people escape from slavery; resembled a railroad
What kind of state should Kansas be if it were following the Missouri compromise? What was it when it came into the union?
It should be a free state; it came in as a free state
What does the Kansas Nebraska act propose? How did this lead to bleeding Kansas?
Proposed popular sovereignty; this leads to northerners being upset and going into Kansas with weapons. Missouri reacts to this by calling ppl to Kansas as well. This results in an outbreak of violence
