1
Q

what is matching encoding and retrieval?

A

increasing retrieval by matching the conditions at retrieval to the conditions at encoding
1. encoding specificity
2. state dependant learning
3. transfer appropriate processing

Q

what is encoding specificity?

A

matching context, we encode information along with its context. (ex. studying when its quiet vs loud)

Q

what is state dependant learning?

A

match mood, we encode information along with out mood and emotional states, memory will be better when retrieving matches with their internal state during encoding

Q

what is transfer appropriate processing?

A

match task, we remember things best when we study the way we will be tested. (ex. being tested in rhymes, so focusing on rhyming rather that meaning during encoding will result in remembering more)

Q

what is consolidation?

A

transforming new memories from a fragile state to a more permanent state, adding delay prevents interruptions of forming stable memories

Q

how does consolidation happen?

A

synaptic consolidation: rapid and occurs and synapses, memories are consolidated by chemical changes in the brain (structural change at synapse)
systems consolidation: gradual and reorganization of neural circuits, new memories are integrated into existing networks of memories
reactivation: during sleep, memory networks are reactivated without new sensory input
