As a field (and provider), what are we primarily interested in?
Developing behavior change programs that teach new, appropriate, adaptive behaviors using non-harmful reinforcers whenever possible.
What is meant by least restrictive procedures?
Procedures requiring the least amount of restraint physically, spatially, etc. Some procedures are more restrictive than others.
Why do we need termination criteria?
To know when to stop treatment. To determine what level of behavior change is needed/desired. Set some mastery/exit criterion for any treatment.
What are the 4 principles involved in developing a behavior change program?
Design programs that are based on behavior analytic principles, including assessments of effects of other intervention; involve the client or client-surrogate in the planning of such programs; obtain the consent of the client; and respect the right of the client to terminate services at any time.
Why should you describe environmental conditions for program success?
So that the client or client’s representative an help establish the conditions necessary for treatment success; find some way to gain control over the key maintaining variables.
If you identify an environmental condition that precludes implementation of a behavioral program, what must you do?
The behavior analyst recommends that other professional assistance (i.e., assessment, consultation, or therapeutic intervention by other professionals) be sought. e.g., because there aren’t resources to fund behavioral treatment or there’s no behavior analyst to implement treatment
If you identify an environmental condition that hampers implementation of a behavioral program, what must you do?
The behavior analyst seeks to eliminate the environmental constraints or identifies in writing the obstacles to doing so.
Behavior programs require certain minimum conditions including a stable environment, some control over reinforcers, consistency in the delivery of consequences, and cooperation of key parties.
When is approval sought for behavioral intervention?
Before implementing procedures.
When developing a behavior change program, what procedures are recommended first?
Reinforcement procedures.
When using punishment programs, what must be included?
Reinforcement procedures for desired behaviors as part of the program.
What are harmful reinforcers?
Reinforcers that may be harmful to the long-term health of the client or participant (cigarettes, sugar, fat-laden foods) or that may require undesirably marked deprivation procedures as motivating operations.
Why do you need ongoing data collection?
To evaluate a program’s effectiveness.
When can modifications be made to a behavioral program?
The behavior analyst modifies the program on the basis of data. The behavior analyst explains the program modifications and the reasons for the modifications to the client or client-surrogate and obtains consent to implement the modifications.
When do you terminate clients?
When the established criteria for termination are attained, as in when a series of planned or revised intervention goals has been completed.
