Flashcards in Ch.1 Deck (21):
1

Physiology

The study of body functions of the body parts

2

Chemical level

Atoms and molecules

3

Cellular level

Cells containing organelles are the basic structural and functional units of an organism, so they are considered to be basic unit of life

4

Tissue level

Tissues are groups of cells and the materials surrounding them that work together to perform a common function. Four basic types are epithelial, connective, muscular, and nervous.

5

Organ level

Organs are groups of tissues performing a common function. They have specific functions and usually have recognizable shapes.

6

System level

Systems consist of related organs that have a common function.

7

Integumentary

-skin, hair, nails, sweat and oil glands
~protection, sensation and regulate body temperature.

8

Skeletal

-Bones, cartilage, joints
~support the body, assists in movement, produces blood cells

9

Muscular

-Skeletal muscles
~movement

10

Nervous

-Brain, spinal cord, nerves, sense organs
~Regulates body activities through hormones

11

Cardiovascular

-blood, heart, blood vessels
~Distributes materials to cells
~Collects waste from cells
~Regulates body acidity and temperature
~Protects against disease

12

Lymphatic

-lymph, lymphatic, lymphocytes, lymph nodes, thymus
~Returns tissue fluids to the blood
~Produces immunity structures and agents

13

Respiratory

-Lungs and associated pathways
~Supplies oxygen and eliminates carbon dioxide

14

Digestive

-Gastrointestinal tract from mouth to stomach to anus and associated organs, liver, teeth and pancreas
~Physical and chemical breakdown of food
~absorption of food

15

Urinary

-kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, urethra
~Regulate the composition the blood
~a remove waste

16

Reproductive

-Organs that produce sperm and ova; oviducts, uterus and vagina in female; penis and sperm ducts in males
~Reproduce the individual
~Produce sex hormones

17

Metabolism

The sum of all the chemical processes that occur in the body

18

Catabolism

Processes that break down substances in the body

19

Anabolism

Processes that build up substances in the body

20

Responsiveness

The body's ability to detect and respond to changes in its internal or external environment

21

Anatomy

The science of structure and the relationship among structures.
