Apprentice programs
Training programs during which a learner works alongside an experienced employee to master the skills and procedures of a craft.
cafeteria-style fringe benefits
Fringe benefits plan that allows employees to choose which benefits they want up to a certain dollar amount.
compensation
All types of financial rewards (i.e., pay in the form of cash) employees receive as part of their employment.
compressed work week
Work schedule that allows an employee to work a full number of hours per week but in fewer days.
contingent workers
Workers who do not have regular, full-time employment.
core time

flextime plan
Work schedule that gives employees some freedom to choose when to work, as long as they work the required number of hours.

The difference between wages earned by men and wages earned by women.
human resource management (HRM)

Creating a culture that strives for equity and embraces, respects, accepts and values difference.

A study of what is done by employees who hold various job titles

A study of what is done by employees who hold various job titles
job simulation
The use of equipment that duplicates job conditions and tasks so that trainees can learn skills before attempting them on the job.
job specifications
A written summary of the minimal education and skills a person needs to do a particular job.
off-the job training
Internal or external training programs away from the workplace that develop any of a variety of skills or foster personal development.
Onboarding
A series of events (including orientation) that helps new hires understand how to be successful in their day-to-day job as well as how their work contributes to the overall business.
reverse discrimination
Discriminating against members of a dominant or majority group (say, whites or males) usually as a result of policies designed to correct previous discrimination against minority or disadvantaged groups.
underemployed workers
Those workers who have more skills or knowledge than their current jobs require, or those with part-time jobs who want to work full-time but cannot find such jobs.
upskilling
The process of teaching employees new skills that will aid them in their work.
vestibule training
Training done in schools where employees are taught on equipment similar to that used on the job. Also called near-the-job training.
