CH13: Takayasu Arteritis Flashcards
Takayasu first described this finding in patients with Takayasu Arteritis
wreath-like anastomosis
What decade/age Takayasu is more commmon?
Third or fourth decade
What antigen was studied in patients with Takayasu arteritis?
HLA-DP antigen
Pathological finding in TA (acute phase)
lymphoplasmacytic inflammation affecting primarily the tunica media, causing the destruction of elastic lamellae
Pathologic finding in TA (intermediate phase)
Partially necrotic media is revascularized by new branches of the vasa vasorum
Pathologic finding in TA (sclerosing stage)
rigid, thick-walled tubes, with severe narrowing or occlusion by superimposed thromboses
Classification of TA
I: only branches of aortic arch
IIa: aorta and ascending portion
IIb: descending aorta involved (abdominal aorta NOT involved)
III: descending aorta + abdominal aorta + renal arteries involved
IV: only the abdominal aorta and or renal arteries
V: generalized type
Neurologic manifestations of TA are due to:
- severe hypertension
- carotid or brachiocephalic obstruction
T/F subclavian steal phenomenon occurs in patients with TA?
Yes.
Differential diagnosis for TA?
Arteriosclerosis
Buerger disease
Congenital vessel anomaliies
Coarctation of the aorta
Dissecting aneurysms
Collagen disease
Behcet disease
