What is mixed-use development
Forms of urban development that comprise different types of activities. Often proposed to reduce dependence on the automobile
What is multiculturalism
The official policy of the Canadian government that minority groups can participate fully in Canadian society. They are encouraged to maintain different social values, practices etc.
What is place making
When planners insert physical/architectural features and events into the urban environment to make it more appealing and ‘place-ful’
What is urban renewal
The strategic reuse of an area of the city that is underused and or run down
What is social housing
Government-funded housing provided To low income households whose housing needs are not adequately met by the private real estate industry. Rent subsidized so that the household does not pay more than 30% of their gross income
What is a slow growth city
Cities where population growth over a ten-year period is less than 10%.
What is citizenship
Formal legal rights and responsibilities conferred automatically to citizens of the state as well as rights
What is social cohesion
The strength of social bonds and society between people from different ethnocultural backgrounds and socioeconomic classes. Strengthening social cohesion is a common social policy goal Of states and politicians.
What is a competitive city
The City that competes economically and culturally with other cities on a national, continental, global scale. To gain world city status is the primary goal of the city, especially larger faster growing cities
