Ch40 Flashcards
(12 cards)
Vegetative propagation
Does it have a gamete
What does it divide by
Is asexual reproduction in plants
No gametes eg flowers
Divides by Mitosis
What are the two types
Natural propagation
Artificial propagation
4 parts are used for natural propagation
Stem
Root
Leaf
Bulbs
What 4 methods are used in artificial propagation?
Cuttings
Grafting
Layering
Micropropagation
What is cutting?
Cutting is cheap,simple. The parent plant stem is removed from parent plant to allow new roots and leaves to form.
What is grafting?
Grafting is the joining of one plant with a second, it is combined with qualities of two plants into one
Eg apple tree grafted to crab apple
What is layering?
Layering is when a growth of a new plant from a stem that is still attached to the parent plant, branch of parent plant is bent down covered in soil but the tip is exposed to air the tip will eventually become stem meaning covered part becomes root system. Eventually separating.eg strawberries
What is micropropagation?
Also known as tissue culturing. This involves use of culture medium (agar) and growth regulators. It is when large numbers of plants produced from small plant pieces (single cell)
Advantages of sexual reproduction
- Off spring shows variations
* less competition
Disadvantages of sexual reproduction
- it is a complex process may depend on outside
* agents - slow growth
Advantages of asexual (vegetative)reproduction
- simple process as no outside agents needed
* rapid growth
Disadvantage of asexual reproduction
- no variations
* more competition, overcrowding
