Ch.8 Weathering Flashcards
(25 cards)
What causes erosion?
Rivers, ice, sea, wind
What causes weathering?
Frost, extreme changes of temperature, chemical reactions
Weathering
The breaking down of rock by weather
Erosion
The breaking down of rock which is then transported away and eventually deposited
Denudation
The wearing away of the earths surface by weathering and erosion
3 types of weathering
Mechanical, chemical, biological
Mechanical weathering
When rocks are being physically broken apart by weather
Chemical weathering
When Rocks are being dissolved gradually overtime
Biological weathering
When rocks are broken apart by animals, plants or human activity. It adds to the speed of chemical and mechanical weathering
Scree
Jagged pieces of rock, broken off by freeze thaw action, that gather at the foot of a slope
Cave or cavern
Passages that form under the limestone due to carbonation
Stalactite
Slender columns of calcite that hang from the ceiling of a cave
Stalagmite
Thick columns of calcite that build up on the floor of a cave, directly below a stalactite
Pillar
Forms when a stalactite and a stalagmite meet each other
Karst landscape
Bare limestone areas (the Burren)
Limestone pavement
The area of Clint’s and Grikes
Clint’s
Irregular shaped slabs of rock on the surface of limestone
Grikes
Deep grooves that separate Clint’s in limestone
Swallow hole
When a river finds its way underground and disappears from the surface
Calcite
When water evaporates, it leaves behind a small drop of calcite
Name 3 advantages of tourism in the Burren
- Direct & indirect jobs are supported
- Local people benefit from services and facilities built for tourists
- greater awareness for preserving the landscape
Name 3 disadvantages of tourism in the Burren
- work is seasonal
- land and houses prices rise
- new buildings and litter ruin the natural landscape
Name a type of mechanical weathering
Freeze thaw action
Name a type of chemical weathering
Carbonation
