Change Detection Paradigm Flashcards

1
Q

What is change detection paradigm?

A
  • STM test that prevents chunking strategies via meaningful units
  • It uses non-meaningful units to prevent chunking and linking information to existing memories

Q

What do the results of the CDP show?

A

True memory capacity = “amount of information” rather than number of items > few complex units of unconnected information may fill up as much capacity as many units of meaningful information

Q

Alvarez & Cavanagh 2004

A
  • True STM capacity (without chunking) is likely around 4 for most people
  • The more complex the items, the lower the performance
  • Simple items are colour geometrical shapes, faces and animals are more complex

Q

How do we know that these representations are independent from each other? (3)

A
  • You can read & understand a word without voicing it
  • Tip of the tongue phenomenon
  • You can say or hear a word without processing its meaning (but are able to recognise it)
