Q

non-metals

A

dull
melting and boiling points are low except for diamond, graphite
mostly liquids / gases at room temperature
electrical and thermal conductivity is poor except for graphite
is brittle(shatter / break when hammered )

16
Q

periodic table

A

vertically is a group, horizontally is a period ,zig-zag lines are present too
every element has a name and symbol
first letter of the element symbol is always a capital letter while the second one is a lowercase
zig zag separates metals rom non-metals
8 groups in table e.g. I II III IV V VI VII and 0, must be written using roman numerals

17
Q

compounds (more things )

A

formed when chemical reaction takes place . during the process, heat and light are given out and new product(s) w different properties are formed
mp and bp are fixed
has different properties from the elements it consists of
can only be separated by chemical methods

18
Q

mixture

A

consists of 2 or more substances that are not chemically combined, has no fixed ratio
mp and bp varies over a range of temps
has same properties as the substances it is mace up of
can be separated by physical methods

solutions and suspensions are example of mixtures, e.g. solute + solvent = solution

19
Q

solution

A

mixture of a solute dissolved in the solvent
particles are evenly spread out so that every part of solutions has the same properties
colour, density, appearance and other properties are the same in every part of the solution

20
Q

suspension

A

mixture containing insoluble fine solid particles in a liquid or gas
insoluble particles tend to sink when the mixture is left to stand due to gravity
colour, density , appearance and other properties are different in every part of the solution

21
Q

colloids

A

mixture where particle size is intermediate between that of a solution and suspension.
dispersed particles are spread evenly throughout the dispersion medium, which can be a solid, liquid or gas
bc dispersed particles of colloid are not as large as those of a suspension ,they do not settle out upon standing
example is paint, blood and milk
solution particle size-0.01-1nm , atoms, ions or molecules
colloids particle size- 1-1000NM; dispersed; large molecules or aggregates
