chap 17 Flashcards
three parts of ear
external, middle, inner
tympanic membrane
separates the external from the middle ear
two parts of external ear
- auricle/pinna
- external auditory canal
3 auditory ossicles
malleus, stapes, incus
bony labyrinth 3 parts
cochlea, vestibule, semicircular canal
history of present health concerns
- recent changes in hearing
- losing ability to hear well
- all sounds affects (low or high pitched)
- ear drainage
- ear pain
- ringing/roaring/crackling
- feelings of spinning
personal health history
- history of ear infections
- past treatments
chronic ear infections, trauma, or earaches can lead tot
permanent damage
lifestyle and health practices
- loud noises/protection
- swimmer
- ability to care for self
- ability to socialize w/ others
- last hearing exam
- hearing aids
- care of ears
assessment of external ear
- inspect auricle, tragus, and lobule
- lesions, discolorations, discharge
- palpate auricle and mastoid process
assessment of inner ear
- using otoscope
- inspect auditory canal
- inspect tympanic membrane
what is normal appearance auditory canal
pink, smooth
what is normal appearance for tympanic membrane
gray, shiny
whisper test
- better ear first
- cover ear not being tested
- 2 ft behind pt
- whisper 2 syllable word
- have client repeat back
- should identify 3/6 words to “pass”
weber test
conduction of soundwaves using a tuning fork on TOP of head
Rinne test
- air and bone conduction using tuning fork on mastoid process and moving to external auditory canal
- can sound still be heard? SHOULD BE HEARD
- air>bone
Romberg tes
- equilibrium test
- stand w/ feet together arms @ side
- start with eyes open and then close
older adult considerations
- elongated ear lobes
- harder, drier cerebrum (occluded more often)
- coarse, thick ear hair
- eardrum may look cloudy
- presbycusis common
- conductive hearing loss due to cerebrum or atrophy of tympanic membrane
presbycusis
difficulty hearing consonants and whispered words
risk factors for hearing loss
- aging
- heredity
- occupational noises
- recreational noises
- medications
- illnesses
