Primary function of Flowers
Producing seeds for Reproduction
Pedicel
Flower Stalk (special stem)
Receptacle
Attached to the end of the Pedicel
Hold the Developing Seeds
Sepals
Green, leaf-like structures at the edge of the Receptacle
flower’s Calyx (“cup” Latin)
Petals
Corolla (“Little Crown” Latin)
Have sweet nectar and attract insects
Stamens
Within the Corolla (Petals), they PRODUCE POLLEN (contain sperm cells).
Have Two Parts:
Filament (elongated stalk) and Anther (the tip - produces pollen)
Pollen
Contain Sperm Cells
Pistils
Vase-Shaped central flower structure. Can be several, usually 1 per flower
3 Parts:
Stigma (tip/entrance - receives pollen)
Style (Connects ovary to tip of the Pistil)
Ovary (Contain Ovules - future seeds)
