Accommodation
Adaptation has two parts
- assimilation
2. adaptation
overall knowledge is the product of direct motor behavior
Sensorimotor stage
6 Sensorimotor stage
- Simple reflexes (0-1 month)
- Primary circular reaction
- Secondary circular reaction (4-8 months)
- Coordination
- Tertiary circular reaction (12-18 months)
- Beginning of thoughts
the child repeating a behavior with its own body. Initially by chance, then becomes deleberate
Primary circular rection
repetition of chance of events with other objects ex/ rattle
Secondary circular reaction
believing something exists even when you cant see it
object permanence
deliberate variations of behavior
Tertiary circular reaction
symbolic of mental representation of thoughts, includes deferred imitation
Beginning of thought
repetition of others behaviors behaviors after it has occured
deferred imitation
how we take in information- depends on what part we attend to
encoding
saving material in memory
storage
recovery of stored information
retrieval
the degree to which an activity requires attention
automatization
includes sounds, facial expression, gestures, imitation
Prelinguistic communication
not well supported: counter evidence is that kids pick up grammar often seemingly automatically come up with novel phrases, and learn to many words too quickly for this to work complete
Learning theory
high pitch, short simple sentences, range of frequencies
infant directed speech
natavistic plus exposure and reinforcement in a general way
interactionist approach
