163
When is the pronoun "y" used?
1. To refer to a place that has already been mentioned. It replaces a prepositional phrase, and its English equivalent in such cases is there. 2. To replace the combination à + noun when the noun refers to a place or thing. This substitution most often occurs after certain verbs that are followed by à: répondre à, réfléchir à, réussir à, penser à (to think about someone or something), jouer à.
164
What is the placement of the pronouns "y" and "en" in a sentence?
The placement of y is identical to that of object pronouns: It precedes a conjugated verb, an infinitive, or an auxiliary verb in the passé composé.
165
When is the pronoun "en" used?
1. To replace a combination of a partitive article (du, de la, de l’) or indefinite article (un, une, des) plus a noun; en is then equivalent to English some or any. Again, whereas these expressions can often be omitted in English, en must always be used in French. 2. To replace a noun modified by a number or by an expression of quantity such as beaucoup de, un kilo de, trop de, deux, and so on. Only en (of it, of them) and the number or expression of quantity are used in place of the noun.
