Chapter 1 Flashcards
Terminology (13 cards)
PNS
Peripheral Nervous system; collection of spinal and cranial nerves whose branches infiltrate almost all parts of the body, conveying messages to and from the CNS
CNS
Central Nervous System; ensconced in the skull and vertebral column, is composed of the brain and the spinal cord
General brain regions
Forebrain (cerebrum), hindbrain (cerebellum), brainstem
Longitudinal fissure
separates cerebral hemispheres
Forebrain major parts
cerebral hemispheres
diencephalon
Sensory neurons
can directly detect senses
or can receive input form non neuronal cells
Neuronal reach names
Interneurons are local
projection neurons have long reach
Nuclei
Specific areas of grey matterWh
White matter bundle names
fasciculus
funiculus
lemniscus
peduncle
tract
Nissil Stain
stains Nissil bodies
contains ribosomes
not many along axons
Axon hillock
cylindrical process that arises abruptly on one side of the neuron cell body
leads into the axon
can also arise off the side of the primary dendrite
Anterograde v Retrograde
anterograde; transport away from the soma. Uses Kinesis.
retrograde; transport towards the soma. Uses Dynein.
