Chapter 4; meninges Flashcards
(9 cards)
Dura mater
provides mechanical strength
normally adheres to Skull and arachnoid mater
has its own blood supply
senses pain
epidural space
between cranium and dura mater
POTENTIAL space
can have swelling, but inherently doesn’t form space
subdural
between dura and arachnoid
Dural separations
the innner layers separate and form breaks in the brain
dural venus sinuses
help drain the brain
cerebral veins empty here
superior sagital sinus- punctured by arachnoid villi
Arachnoid mater
middle layer of meninges
web-like look to it
forms a barrier around the brain
subarachnoid space
filled with CSF
only substantially filled fluid space outside fo teh brain
large regions of this are subarachnoid cisternae
CSF enters blood stream through arachnoid villi
Pia mater
thin layer covering the CNS
basically impossible to separate from it
