chapter #1 Flashcards
(17 cards)
what is Psychopharmacology?
the study of how drugs effect the brain.
define Drug
An administered substance that affects physiogical functionting
define psychoactive drugs
Drugs the have an effect on mood, perception, cognition, behavior
Define Psychotropic Drugs
a drug used to treat psychological disorders
instrumental vs recreational drug use
instrumrntal is used to address a specific purpose
recreational is to use a drug to experince the effect.
define Dose
the ratio of drug per body weight
Effective Dose50 (ED50)
the dose that is needed for 50 percent of users have the response
define Potency
the amount needed to have effect compared to other drugs
Define Toxic Dose
dose that is need to experience toxic effects.
Therapeutic index
=TD50/ED50
certain safety index
divide the TD1 by ED99 **ideally the two dose response curves don’t overlap at all
Addive VS synergistic Drug Effects
Additive: the magnitude of the effect would be the sum of each drugEx.1+1=2
synergistic: the combinded effect is greater the both effect Ex.1+1=4
objective vs subjective effects
objective effects can be directly observed
subjective can not be observed and are self reported often mood changes
dependent vs independent variable
dependent is what we are studying
independent are thing not being studied but effect the dependent variable
define: placebo and active plavebo
placebo is used in place of an experimental drug the to see the as a control
the active placebos have simalr side effects as the experimental drug making it harder to tell if you got the experimental or placebo
single Vs double blind vs open label
-blind is when the participants dont know if they have the placebo .
-double blind is when both the participants and researchers know who got the placebo.
-open label is when there is no blind procedures.
what are the Three R’s
Replace, Reduce, Refine
