chapter 1 Flashcards

(28 cards)

1
Q

difference between qualitative and quantitative data

A

qualitative: involves senses (touch, hear, smell, taste, sight)
usually descriptive (eg. heavy, long, fast)
quantitative: involves senses and measurements taken using instruments
usually numerical

Q

SI for volume

A

17
Q

what does a measuring cylinder measure?

A

volume of liquid

18
Q

what are the 2 types of errors?

A

zero error
parallex error

19
Q

meaning of accuracy

A

how close the measurement is to the true value

20
Q

what is zero error?

A

when an instrument gives a non-zero reading when the measured quantity is zero

(the balance should be at zero before able to measure things)

21
Q

how to resolve zero error?

A
  1. adjust the instrument to reduce zero error
  2. add or subtract difference of zero error
22
Q

what is parallex error?

A

when a person views the instrument at a wrong angle

23
Q

how to resolve parallex error?

A

take reading at the correct angle by aligning eyes to the curve

(eg. when measuring volume of liquid using measuring cylinder or beaker, eyes should be aligned with the curve level of water)

24
Q

what is precision

A

when you get the readings are close to one another or the same

25
function of a filter funnel
filters mixture of solid and liquid with the help of a filter paper
26
function of evaporating dish
used to evaporate liquid
27
function of tripod stand with wire gauze
support the apparatus that is being heated by the Bunsen burner eg. beaker
28
meaning of physical properties
physical properties are things you can see, measure and feel about a substance without changing what it is
