Chapter 1 Flashcards
(25 cards)
What is the magnification for low, medium and high power? What is the total magnification for all?
4x, 10x and 40x
40x, 100x and 400x
What are the five characteristics?
Respond to the environment, Reproduce, Needs Energy, Growth and Get rid of waste.
What is a proper way to carry a microscope?
Holding the arm and base.
What is the function of the cell membrane?
It protects the cell and gives the cell shape. It also controls what comes in the cell and out of the cell.
What is cytoplasm?
It is a jelly-like substance that contains organelles, water and other life supporting materials.
What is the function of the nucleus?
The nucleus is the control centre. It controls all the activities within a cell.
What is the function of mitochondria?
They are the energy producers in the cell.
What do you need for cellular respiration?
Glucose, oxygen, co2 and water.
What are the function of ribosomes?
They assemble the proteins.
What is endoplasmic reticulum?
It is a network of membrane-covered channels that look a bit like the folds of a fan or accordion. It holds the ribosomes in place.
What is the function of the Golgi body?
It sorts the proteins and packs them into membranes-wrapped structures called vesicles.
What is the function of vesicles?
They are like a mail system. It carries the protein, nutrients, water into and out the inside of the cell.
What are the functions of vacuoles?
They are storage compartments that store waste and water.
What is a cell wall?
A tough, rigid structure that surrounds the cell membrane and gives a regular box-like shape. It also protects the cell.
What are the function of chloroplast?
It traps the energy from the sun and does photosynthesis.
What do you need for photosynthesis to occur?
Light energy, co2, water, glucose and oxygen.
What is the cell theory?
The cell is the basic unit of life.
All organisms are composed of one or more cells.
All cells come for other living cells.
What are the prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells?
Prokaryotic cells are cells with no surrounding membranes.
Eukaryotic cells are cells with surrounding membranes.
How is bacteria helpful?
Bacteria can help fight infections, it can create medicine to help treat diabetes, cheese and yogurt.
How can viruses reproduce if they are non-living?
Viruses need a a hot cell in the nucleus to eject its DNA into the host.
What is diffusion?
The movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to low concentration.
What is concentration?
The amount of substance in a given space.
What is a selectively permeable membrane?
A cell membrane.
What is osmosis?
The diffusion of water particles from an area of higher concentration to lower concentration.
