16
Q

What happened in the mid 1800’s

old cottage system had been replaced by the factory system

17
Q

What occurred Post Civil War

A

great expansion of production capacity occurred. Increased capital and production capacity, expanded workforce, new Western US markets, effective national transportation system.

18
Q

Who is the father of Scientific Management?

A

Frederick Taylor

19
Q

What was Taylor’s Shop System?

A
  1. Assessed each worker’s skill, strength, and learning ability.
  2. Stopwatch studies used to precisely set standard output per worker on each tasks.
  3. Instruction cards, routing sequences, and materials specifications were used to coordinate and organize the shop so work flow could be standardized and labor output standards be met.
  4. Supervisors were carefully selected and trained.
  5. Incentive pay systems were initiated to increase efficiency and to relieve foremen of driving workers.
20
Q

What were Behavioralists able to accomplish?

A

thanks to their efforts there came a gradual change in the way managers thought about and treated workers.

21
Q

What is Operations Research?

A

seeks to replace intuitive decision making for large complex problems with an approach that identifies the optimal alternative through analysis.

22
Q

Process of Operations as a System

A

receives inputs, then changed in a conversion subsystem, then to what are called outputs, which is then monitored in the control subsystem to determine if its acceptable.

23
Q

What are External Inputs

A

Legal, Social, Technological

24
Q

What are Market Inputs

A

Competition, Customer Desires, Product Information

25
What are Primary Resources
Materials, Personnel, Capital and Capital Goods, Utilities
26
Tangible goods are?
Products that are produced daily
27
Intangible outputs are?
outputs that pour from production systems (education, trash hauling, tax accounting, insurance)
28
What is Strategic Decision?
decision about products, processes, and facilities
29
What is Operation Decision?
decision about planning production to meet demand
30
